4 Things to Ask Your Chiropractor

4 Things to Ask Your Chiropractor

Are you just getting started with chiropractic care? If so, you may be a bit uncertain as to what, exactly, you should expect. Read on as a Hilliard, OH chiropractor lists some key things you'll want to ask.

How Can I Improve My Results?

Ideally, chiropractic care is just one slice of your personal wellness pie. The results can certainly be affected by things like diet, lifestyle, and exercise. (Choosing the right chiropractor is of course paramount, but we'll address that in another article.) There are also certain things you can do to maximize the benefits of your appointments. Massage, for example, works very well with chiropractic treatments. It loosens the soft tissue around your bones, which will help facilitate the alignments. Your chiropractor may also advise taking specific supplements, adjusting your diet or exercise regimen, and/or doing certain stretches.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

When it comes to chiropractic care, everyone has different needs. Someone who is receiving treatments to heal after a car accident may only need chiropractic care for a while. Others will require ongoing treatments to manage or prevent chronic issues. There are also cases where it isn't clear at the outset how much treatment will be required. It’s important to have this discussion before starting treatment.

What Techniques Are Used?

Many chiropractors use the HVLA (High velocity, low amplitude) thrust to perform adjustments. This, essentially, is when the chiropractor uses their hands to manipulate the spine. However, there are other methods. For example, for someone with osteoporosis, a low force technique would be more appropriate, as that patient would have an elevated risk of injury. Chiropractors may also use certain instruments to focus on specific vertebrae. Some will use other equipment, such as special tables. It's important to have open communication with your chiropractor, and understand not only what techniques they will use, but also why.

What Other Services Do You Offer?

While the main focus of chiropractic treatment is generally to align the spine, many chiropractors offer other services, such as massage. They also may be able to recommend specific supplements, exercises, or nutritional tips. Some chiropractors also partner with other professionals, such as masseuses, even if they aren't in the same building. It never hurts to ask!
