Headaches and Chiropractic

Did you know that as many as nine out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches? Many people suffer frequent, painful headaches, which can be quite debilitating. This is fairly common knowledge. But what isn't so well known is the fact that chiropractic treatments can help with this. A Galloway, OH chiropractor discusses headaches and chiropractic treatment in this article.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Studies have shown that chiropractic care is effective in treating certain headaches, such as tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) reported in 2011 that spinal manipulation helped reduce migraine and cervicogenic headaches. In 2014, the JMPT published a study noting that chiropractic care improved outcomes for patients suffering from acute and chronic neck pain.

For migraine sufferers, chiropractic care also reduces the intensity and frequency of episodes. Your chiropractor may be able to assist by performing spinal manipulations or adjustments, which will ease pressure on the spine, reduce stiffness, and, of course, relieve pain. They may also be able to offer advice on things like diet, exercise, and/or supplements that may help.

What Are The Treatment Options?

Headaches can be treated in a variety of ways. These may include manual therapy, such as alignments, to soft tissue therapy, such as massage. That said, many treatments will be most effective when combined with other practices, such as lifestyle changes, acupuncture, and rehabilitation.

Headache Prevention

Hopefully this goes without saying, but if you’re suffering frequent or severe headaches, you should consult your doctor immediately. That said, it's always beneficial to take steps to reduce or prevent headaches when possible. You can reduce your risk by recognizing and reducing your exposure to things that trigger them. These vary from person to person, but can include things like certain foods, bright lights, loud noises, and even certain scents. The American Chiropractic Association also recommends low-impact exercise. If you spend a lot of time behind a desk, be sure that your posture and lighting are ergonomically correct, and remember to get up and stretch every 30 minutes. It's also important to make sure you’re drinking enough water and, if applicable, to stop clenching your teeth. Chiropractic care, of course, can also be very beneficial. Contact us to learn more.
